Govt to release stamp in honour of Narasimha Rao | India News

NEW DELHI: The government has decided to release a postal stamp in the honour of P V Narasimha Rao to mark the birth centenary of the late leader who was India’s ninth PM, a day after PM Narendra Modi praised him for leading the country out of an economic crisis in 1991 and recalling his participation in protests against the Hyderabad Nizam‘s ban on Vande Mataram.
Rao has been praised as the architect of economic reforms and liberalisation which helped India come out of a long spell of economic stagnation and the stamp will recognise his contributions.
When contacted, communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad confirmed the decision. “Rao was denied his due during his lifetime. I hope that Congress will now realise its mistake and reverse it by supporting a modest attempt to give the former PM the honour and recognition that he always deserved,” Prasad said.
